How to Get File Explorer to Display Details by Default Based on Ask Leo!

Do you find yourself constantly switching your Windows File Explorer view from “Icons” to “Details” every time you open a folder? It’s a common annoyance, but there is a quick way to make Windows remember your preference.

The “Details” view is arguably the most functional view in File Explorer, providing crucial information like file size, type, and date modified at a glance.

Here is how to set File Explorer to always show details by default, ensuring all folders open in this efficient view. Setting “Details” View as the Default

Open File Explorer: You can do this by clicking the folder icon in your taskbar or pressing Windows Key + E.

Select the “View” Menu: At the top of the window, click on the View tab.

Choose “Details”: Within the Layout section, click on Details.

Open Folder Options: On the far right of the ribbon menu, click on Options (or “Change folder and search options” in some Windows versions).

Open the View Tab: In the Folder Options window that appears, click on the View tab.

Apply to All Folders: Click the button that says Apply to Folders.

Confirm: Click Yes when asked if you want all folders to match this view, then click OK.

Now, every time you open a new folder in File Explorer, it will default to the Detailed view. Pro-Tips for File Management

Keep it Standard: By following these steps, you eliminate the need to manually change the view every time you navigate, saving time and keeping your file management consistent.

Use the Details Pane: For even more granular information about a selected file (like EXIF data in photos), you can enable the Details Pane from the same View tab.
